Wales seal their place at Euro 2020 Posted On 20 November 2019

Aaron Ramsey double secures spot, while Gareth Bale enrages Real Madrid supporters

Ryan Giggs’s Wales secured automatic qualification for Euro 2020 last night with a 2-0 victory over Hungary. Aaron Ramsey – starting his first game for a year – headed home from a Bale cross in the seventh-minute before adding a second two minutes into the second half.

Gareth Bale and Aaron Ramsey play for two of the biggest clubs in world football; Real Madrid and Juventus, and in Cardiff last night it showed on the pitch. The two attacking Welshmen had too much quality for the outclassed Hungarians on the night. It was the first time Bale and Ramsey have linked up for 368 days and as long as they can stay fit for next summer, Ryan Giggs will believe they can go into the tournament able to beat anybody.

This youthful Wales side including Joe Morrell who is on loan at Lincoln City and Dan James of Manchester United, looked vibrant and energetic every time they received the ball and striker Kieffer Moore of Wigan led the line impressively. Alongside veterans Joe Allen, Wayne Hennessey, Bale and Ramsey, Giggs has put together a strong team with the ethos on teamwork.

The final whistle prompted a carnival atmosphere in Cardiff with the players taking centre stage, performing a synchronised belly flop at the Canton Stand end. Gareth Bale caused controversy back in Madrid when he borrowed a flag from the crowd that read ‘Wales. Golf. Madrid. In That Order.’ However, anyone with a sense of humour should realise this wasn’t his flag, and he was celebrating a massive moment for his home nation.

Manager Ryan Giggs said after the match: “It doesn’t get any better than that. Credit to the lads, coming back from where we were in the summer after two defeats. We showed grit, determination and quality. It’s one of the best days of my life.

“We defended really well but we can play better. Overall, two goals and a clean sheet and they didn’t really trouble us apart from the save from Wayne Hennessey in the first half.

“This side can do a lot more. There is quality in the squad, not just the XI. Every player has shown their class, some of the lads were on their last legs at the end there.”

The draw for the EURO 2020 finals will take place in Bucharest, Romania on November 30th at 6 pm.

EURO 2020 starts on June 12th and runs to the 12th July 2020. As a celebration of the 16th UEFA European Championship and to celebrate the tournament’s 60th birthday, the tournament will be hosted in 12 cities: Amsterdam (Netherlands) -Johan Cruyff Arena, Baku (Azerbaijan) – Olympic Stadium, Bilbao (Spain) – San Mames, Bucharest (Romania) – Arena Nationala, Budapest (Hungary) – Puskas Arena, Copenhagen (Denmark) – Parken Stadium, Dublin (Republic of Ireland) – Aviva Stadium, Glasgow (Scotland) – Hampden Park, London (England) – Wembley Stadium, Munich (Germany) – Allianz Arena, Rome (Italy) – Stadio Olimpico, Saint Petersburg (Russia) – Krestovsky Stadium.
